In Honor of Spring

My calendar says today, March 20th, is the first day of Spring - the Vernal Equinox.  Here in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, we woke up to a good three inches of snow!  Spring comes late and beneath this fresh, new snow our ground is still covered in several inches of ice, around here we wear cleats on our boots just to go for a walk!  However, the days are longer and we can almost imagine the sun having some heat to it.  Here in the "Great White North" we have to be patient, we know that one day the song  birds will return, the wild flowers will bloom, the grass and leaves will sprout with that indescribable shade of green that only spring delivers.

Spring is one of the best times to cleanse. Before embarking on your weight loss program, doing a short cleanse can really help to rid the body of unwanted toxins, make you feel lighter and rejuvenated quickly.

If you are new to cleansing, start with a short 3 day juice fast.  If you are taking medications or have a medical condition, check with your medical dr. first before cleansing.

Raw Mixed Vegetable Juice from The Great Liquid Diet by Leonard Mehlmauer ND (my sclerology teacher).  This recipe yields about 16 oz.  Enjoy and be sure to “chew” your juice!

  • 3 large carrots
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1/3rd beet
  • 1 garlic bud
  • ½ zucchini or cucumber
  • 2 large apples with peel
  • 1/3rd fresh lemon with peel

Scrub ingredients in soapy water, then rinse in cold clear water, cut into sizes that will fit easily into your juicer and juice.

If your ingredients are not organic be sure to soak them briefly in hot soapy water, then scrub them very carefully and rinse. Other veggies, especially green ones, can be substituted for the celery and zucchini – such as asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, parsley, cabbage, etc.  I  personally like to add about 1 inch of peeled ginger to all my juices.

Another popular spring time cleanse is the Master Cleanse this one uses lemon, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and water.  I find I have to take cleansing herbs and psyllium to keep bowels moving on this one, but it seems to work great for others.

Please note there is a very specific way to come off a juice fast or any cleanse that eliminates food.  Please refer to pages 4 and 5  of the Master Cleanse for instructions.

Don’t have the determination to give up food? Try Nature’s Sunshine Tiao He Pak (10 day cleanse) or Bod-E-Klenz (up to 30 days) these herbs will help cleanse and detoxify while you eat a whole food diet rich in berries, veggies, lean protein and whole grains.  Be sure to add in lots of foods that help your body detoxify such as chlorophyll rich foods, fruits, vegetables, gelatinous plant foods (chia seeds, aloe vera), parsley (cleanses the blood supply), cilantro (binds with heavy metals), and most important lots of clean water and fresh air!

Quick Tip: Feeling a little bloated?  Asparagus is a great vegetable to eat raw, it’s a natural diuretic.
